Dare to Bare? Bare feet training

by The Third Space Classes on Friday 17th February 2012
Barefoot running has become more common amongst the running fraternity, with a growing number of athletes choosing to run shoeless since the progenitors of this movement emerged during the 1960s. It has now reached a wider audience, with increasing numbers of recreational runners taking to the trails barefoot.

Traditionally, those who run in shoes strike the ground heel first, and trainer design has evolved accordingly to absorb the impact. Barefoot running, also known as natural running, requires a change in technique – instead the emphasis is put on the fore-foot or mid-foot, allowing the natural arch of the foot to take the force. Runners report that this style of running feels freer, and allows them to return to their natural state.

The growing popularity of this trend has seen a number of brands develop and market shoes specifically designed to simulate the barefoot experience, including Vibram Fivefingers, Vivobarefoot and Nike Free Trainers. Anyone considering introducing barefoot running to their regime should first have a biomechanical assessment and gait analysis to identify any pre-existing muscle imbalances or weaknesses that could cause injury when they are exposed to the higher intensity of running barefoot. They should start slowly, gradually increasing the distance covered, to condition the lower limbs and feet to this change in technique, and reduce the risk of injury.

The barefoot trend is not just limited to runners - many people are now realising the benefits of performing strength exercise such as deadlifts and squats without shoes. This can help increase strength in the supporting musculature of the foot and ankle, improve proprioceptive ability, and potentially decrease the risk of chronic foot injuries.

If you would like to experience Barefoot Training for yourself why not join our class, open to all members, held at The Third Space in Soho on Fridays at 12.15.

Please remember when you have finished your barefoot training to put your shoes back on before walking around the Club!
